TPP: Out of the Shadows! As the 14th major round Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations gets under way in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, please join with labor, environmental, public health, family farm, consumer, Occupy and other social justice organizations from September 6-15th for a major mobilization demanding an end to back-room dealmaking for the 1%.The TPP is poised to become the largest Free Trade Agreement in U.S. history. Approximately 600 corporate lobbyists have been granted access to the negotiating texts, while the general public is barred from even reviewing what U.S. negotiators are proposing in our names. If it continues on its current course, the TPP is likely to:

- Offshore good-paying jobs to low-wage nations and undercut working conditions globally
- Create new tools for attacking environmental and consumer safety policies
- Deregulate Wall Street banks, hedge funds and insurance companies
- Further concentrate global food supplies, displacing family farmers, expanding factory farms and subjecting consumers to wild price fluctuations
- Lengthen patents thereby blocking access to affordable, generic medications

Activities will include:

- a free direct action training in Baltimore in preparation for the week of action on Saturday, September 8th and Sunday, September 9th
- a rally at the site of the negotiations on Sunday, September 9th
- creative actions through the negotiations!

RSVP online now for info on carpools, buses, housing, and volunteer opportunities.

John Maher, Adjunct Professor of Law at Touro Law, will discuss globalization of GMOs – Do such technologies cause an unacceptable economic and political imbalance between supplier, grower and consumer in terms of environmental safety, labeling and consumer choice and environmental conservation. Is there any choice at all to avoid use of or exposure to GMOs under the political economy and legal system?

John E. Peck, Executive Director, Family Farm Defenders, will discuss how corporate agribusiness is “earning” carbon credits for building factory farms in the global south.

Adam Weissman of Global Justice for Animals and the Environment, will explore:

- How agribusiness is creating global markets for factory farmed animal products by pushing for agricultural tariff elimination and sanitary standards harmonization

- the use of World Trade Organization challenges to attack import bans on foods produced by methods that compromise food safety, endanger wildlife, and cause animal suffering and to prohibit product labeling that helps consumers avoid unsustainable, inhumane, and dangerous foods.

- how first world factory farm exports are driving agriculture in the rest of the world in the direction of factory farming to remain competitive

- why this threatens farming communities, the environment, animal welfare, and global health.

Tools, Skills or Messages Participants Will Take Home:

John: The method, globalization, by which the neo-liberal pan-nation states have eliminated “choice” while propounding that humans live in an era of expanding freedoms will be explained.”

About the Presenters:

Kathy Ozer, Executive Director,
National Family Farm Coalition
Kathy Ozer is the executive director of the National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC), which represents family farm and rural groups whose members face the challenge of the deepening economic recession in rural communities. NFFC unites and strengthens the voices and actions of its diverse grassroots members to demand viable livelihoods for family farmers, fishers, and workers, safe and healthy food for everyone, and economically and environmentally sound rural communities.

Leticia Alanis, Executive Director,
La Union
Leticia Alanis is the executive director of La Union, an organization of people of the global south working to advance the social, economic, and cultural rights of the communities where they now live and the communities they left behind. The 600 members of La Unión are predominantly from the Mixteca region of Mexico and immigrants from across Latin America. La Unión is based in the neighborhood of Sunset Park, Brooklyn; one of New York City’s largest Mexican immigrant neighborhoods.

Daira Quiñones, President
Mutual Association Afro-Colombian for Integrated Development and Entrepreneurship
Daria Quiñones is a singer, dancer, poet, and activist from Bogota, Colombia. She is among 4.9 million Colombians displaced by violence, and she currently works to empower other displaced people in Bogota.

John Kinsman, President
Family Farm Defenders
John Kinsman is an organic dairy farmer and forester from Lime Ridge, Wisconsin. He raises 36 cows on a 150-acre farm – 80 acres of which are devoted to rotational grazing and hay production, while another 70 acres is devoted to woodland. John Kinsman is president of Family Farm Defenders (FFD), a group he helped found in 1994 to promote sustainable agriculture, fair trade, workers rights, animal welfare, consumer safety, environmental stewardship and – above all - food sovereignty. He is also the secretary of the National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC). Through FFD, John also works to relocalize food/farm economies and forge new economic relationships between consumers and farmers. One example of this is the Family Farmer Fair Trade Project that enables FFD to direct market cheese from Cedar Grove in Plain WI, giving farmers a fair price while providing a healthier rBGH free alternative to consumers. John remains one of the leading U.S. critics of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and is also an outspoken critic of corporate globalization. As one of the farmer leaders involved in Via Campesina, the largest umbrella organization for farmers, fishers, foresters, hunters, gatherers, and indigenous peoples in the world – he has also traveled extensively around the world to share the message of food sovereignty.

Why Protest Crowley?

Queens Congressional Rep and Queens Democratic Machine Boss Joseph Crowley, first won his Congressional seat in an unopposed primary and is reelected term after term with virtually no electoral opposition. Crowley has abused this safe seat to continually sell out the interests of the 99% while taking in big money from the corporate elites.

Crowley heads the New Democrats Coalition, an alliance of centrist, pro-corporate Democratic legislators tied to the infamous Democratic Leadership Council. A ProPublica expose revealed the New Democrats’s close ties to “large banks, pharmaceutical firms, insurance companies, and big-ticket trade groups” (http://www.propublica.org/article/new-democrat-coalition).

The Office of Congressional Ethics recommended a full-blown probe of whether improperly solicited donations from corporate executives just before voting on legislation overhauling Wall Street. The scrutiny centers on a series of fund-raisers — including one Crowley attended last Dec. 10, at which he collected thousands of dollars from financial power brokers before returning to the Capitol to vote against a series of amendments that would have imposed tougher restrictions on Wall Street. Crowley was reported to have received at least $23,500 before the vote.

As New Democrats coalition leader, Crowley, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Congressional committee that oversees trade legislation, pushed Obama to pass free trade agreements with Colombia, South Korea, and Panama, pressured other Congressmembers to vote for them, and voted for all three agreements in October – despite knowing that these agreements will:

- give foreign corporation the right to sue the US for unlimited sums in international tribunals if they believe our environmental, health, food safety, and labor laws interfere with their future potential profits.

- protect the 1% and multinational corporations’ use of Panamanian banks to hide their wealth to avoid paying taxes in the US while vital social services are cut. This will also help Colombia cocaine cartels linked to paramilitary terrorist groups launder drug profits.

- outsource an estimated 214,000 US jobs – many to exploitative sweatshops.

- exacerbate the destruction of the Amazon rainforest, Panama’s Darien Rainforest and other endangered ecosystems and wildlife by oil, mining, logging, natural gas, and plantation agriculture interests.

- ban regulations on Wall Street – prohibiting rules against toxic derivatives, “too big to fail”, and commonsense capital controls.

- exacerbate human rights atrocities and assassinations of labor organizers, indigenous leaders, Afro-Colombians, environmental and gay rights activists, judges, journalists, children, and community organizers by government-linked, right-wing paramilitary death squads working to advance the interests of Coca-Cola and other US corporations operating in Colombia. Since the October vote for the Colombia FTA the assassinations have continued with victims including an election observer, an indigenous leader, an advocate for the rights of displaced persons, and a union organizer.

- continue the displacement of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples in Colombia and Panama.

- expand exports of inhumane, polluting, dangerous factory farms that produce toxic foods and incubate diseases like swine flu and bird flu and drive family farmers out of business.

- limit access to AIDS drugs and other life saving medications by expanding corporate patent rights on drugs.

- encourage the privatization of education and other public services, making them less affordable for the 99%.

- force South Korea to eliminate its ban on genetically modified foods and to import US cars that fail to meet Korean auto emissions standards, exacerbating climate change.

With Obama negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a new, 9 country free trade agreement that looks to be even worse than the Panama, Colombia, and South Korea Free Trade Agreements, it’s vital that we let Congressman Crowley and other Wall Street Democrats know that they will be held accountable when they sell us out to the 1%!
